This video is a response to the current news about Bishop Eddie Long:

Hello,  This is Pastor Dennis Meredith from Tabernacle Baptist Church, Atlanta, GA.   I am writing concerning my anger and disappointment with Bishop Long (and other pastors like him) regarding sexual misconduct with young men.

I am an openly gay-bisexual pastor. I came out to my congregation in 2007. I have a membership of around 2000; and 85% are same gender loving. I know what it is like to be afraid to admit your human sexuality to your congregation. However, fear does not excuse you from taking responsibility for your actions -- especially in this case where young, innocent children are violated.

I am appalled at the hypocrisy brought to this situation. Bishop Long has demonized and dehumanized the gay community. He has led marches against same sex marriage; and has a program in his church to exit the gay lifestyle. At the same time, he uses his power and influence to convince young and impressionable boys to have sex with him – as if this was God’s will.

It further saddens me, that not one word in his statement yesterday was in reference to the pain and psychic scars caused in the lives of these boys and their families – who continue to live in fear of what may happen to them. The real heroes in this case are the boys who had the courage to stop Bishop Long from continuing to violate young boys in the name of God. Bishop Long’s actions seem arrogant, hypocritical, and cowardice. Bishop Long has an opportunity today, to tell the truth, and liberate our church and society, who continue to hold oppressive dispositions that lead to secrecy, shame, and then crime!

I have lived this life for 57 years. I personally know that there are several pastors in this city and across this country who are just like Bishop Long --  and it's time to stop homophobic, hypocritical preaching from African American pulpits -- using the pulpit as a smoke screen for indiscretion and to legitimize violations and crimes against young children.

God’s Love is Inclusive

Words from Sister Meredith
First Lady of Tabernacle Baptist Church

The progress of the African American community has been built on our tenacity to hold on to TRUTH.  We did not believe we were inferior, so we joined arms with Dr. King to dispel the lies of our oppressors.  In the words of the great Dr. King, “truth crushed to earth will rise again … and no lie will live forever.”  My prayer upon hearing of the tragedy of these young African American boys has been that God’s hand is pulling back a dark veil that has caused so many to become victims of “self-hate” and the destruction that follows.  Are we more concerned about knowing the truth or upholding a lie? Are we content to prove a lie so that the status quo of hate and oppression remains the norm in church and society?  The response of the church has not been investigation and outrage over the lives of more than 30 boys and others who have suffered as the result of sexual misconduct -- Misconduct that found its life because our church and society refused to accept a GAY/BISEXUAL man or woman of God.  Secrecy and self-hate breeds misconduct and self-destruction.  My appeal to the church is to return to the truth.  The Truth: God’s love is inclusive: inclusive to “heal the hurt and emotional scars of the boys and their families” that have been victimized; and inclusive to “forgive and make whole a leader” whose secret and shame has lead to this horrible crime.  The truth will liberate our church and society from hate and bigotry against those who are different: colored, gay, poor, disabled … no matter what the difference … the church must begin to wake up to truth and walk in truth.  As we are silent,  and will not disclose the truth, we are as guilty as the molester, the murderer … and we perpetuate a society that will continue to commit inhumane crimes … instead of creating a church and society of peace.
